My life on film might well be called "From Monasticism to Maternity". I'm a medical anthropologist whose first book was about Buddhist Nuns and whose second book is about the shift of birth between home to hospital in India and the US, and its relationship to maternal mortality.
I'm a literary mama looking into high tech birth in the US and low tech birth in rural Indian Himalayas. I am curious to see how birth is medicalized and ritualized in both contexts. Although one might assume that birth in rural Zangskar is overly ritualized and birth in the states is overly medicalized, the truth is far more complex. Stay tuned for more on the complexities of sorting through two very different obstetric realms...
